Bringing Full Size standards and practices to Model Aeroplane Training

Hello, I am Russ Bowey, founder of Model Plane Training Ltd.

An experienced model pilot & British Model Flying Association "Qualified Instructor"well as a long-time full size Commercial Pilot, Instructor (with over 2,700 instructional hours) & Examiner. I am a keen proponent of structured model aeroplane training & now combine the knowledge of both disciplines, to bring full sized training standards & practices to Model Plane Training, whether that be for BASIC, BEYOND THE A TEST (Intermediate), or ADVANCED flying training.

BASIC training takes the newcomer from the first flights, all the way to taking the BMFA 'A' test (used by many clubs as a 'safe solo' standard).
BEYOND THE A TEST training is for those who has passed the BMFA 'A' test, to now achieve better aircraft set-up, more precise flying, or increasing the  precision of basic aerobatic manoeuvres.
ADVANCED training is for those wishing to fly much more advanced precision manoeuvres, or to fly very precise aerobatics up to a competition standard, for example in F3A, or IMAC disciplines.

Training can of course be offered to juniors too! Please note that parents are asked to be present. The latest DBS check is shown here:

Training is given on fixed wing aircraft, using Mode 2 transmitter controls (throttle & rudder on the left stick, aileron & elevator on the right stick).

The company is based in the East Midlands & typically uses the excellent facilities at the BMFA Nation Centre at Buckminster. As an option & if commercial training is allowed at your club, training can be conducted at your own flying site.

Every training course is bespoke to the individual/group needs. Please call to discuss your requirements & I will endeavour to give you a very competitively priced package. Prices start from as little as £15/hour & only the time spent briefing, flying, and debriefing is chargeable. Please note there is a minimum charge of £30 per flying session - which are of course normally 2 hours anyway! -  & typically include 4 x 8 minute training flights.

Basic training and 'Beyond the A test'

The company has a well proven Max Thrust (balsa) RIOT available for basic training. This is the perfect aircraft to learn all the basics flying skills, or to prepare you to take the BMFA A test.

Training flights are operated 'Dual Control' using two transmitters, linked via a 'Buddy box' system.

With just a few set-up & power supply changes, the Riot is also a very capable aerobatic aircraft for those looking to advance their flying skills Beyond the A test. It will easily fly all normal precision aerobatic manoeuvres including for example, those required by the BMFA 'B' test!

Advanced training

The company's Sebart Miss Wind is capable of flying F3A P&F & the IMAC Advanced schedules.

A Phoenix Sbach 342 is also available for more dedicated IMAC training flights & an Oxai Citrin is available which is capable of all F3A schedules.

All models will be flown on a Buddy Box, using Graupner PRO radio system, with many advanced features, the biplane for example have aileron 'crow' braking, throttle based dual rates & logic switch snap roll settings. All models are approximately 1.5m wingspan, electric 6S powered & with flight times of up to 8 minutes.
