It had been 50 years since I last flew a model plane. Now I'm retired with a little spare time I thought I would return to a hobby I always had an interest in but just no time to engage with properly. I've joined a local club but thought I would get some assistance from someone with teaching experience. Russ from Model Plane Training Ltd was absolutely brilliant. The session took place at BMFA Buckminster and Russ put me at ease straight away. It was a bit windy but with the buddy box link Russ was able to step in when the wind got the better of me. He explained very clearly what I needed to look for during each of the 4 flights and I felt I was starting to control the plane towards the end of my session. Each flight was punctuated with a useful debrief and useful information and tips about models and model flying. A highlight was watching Russ flying an acrobatic schedule from start to finish with a running commentary. He was also kind enough to check over two of my models. He took me (a true novice in every sense of the word!) from potential carnage to safe flying. His knowledge is vast and his tuition methodology is perfect, I am greatly looking forward to more tuition with him once I can say my Space Bar days are truly behind me. Apart from the weather, Russ is extremely flexible when it comes to arranging times to train. His relaxed attitude fills you with confidence right from the start. He gives precise, and structured instructions, and is extremely patient and easy going. There are flying clubs out there that offer free tuition, however, from my experience it was an uphill battle from day one. Eventually just before throwing in the towel I contacted the BMFA in Buckminster who gave me Russ’s contact details, I’ve never looked back. What a brilliant service.
